What Is a Deck Ledger?

A deck ledger is a board fastened to a building to support one side of an attached deck. It connects deck framing to the house and helps transfer deck loads into the structure. Proper placement, fasteners, flashing, and sound wood help keep water from entering the wall around the connection.

Key Takeaways About Deck Ledger

  • It connects an attached deck to the building.
  • Flashing helps protect the wall connection from water.
  • A ledger is not the same as a freestanding deck beam.

How Deck Ledger Works

A power drill, level, bolts, screws, wrench, gloves, and tape are laid out beside a wooden board on concrete

The deck ledger sits against the house and forms the starting edge for the deck frame. Floor joists connect to the ledger with framing hardware, while beams and posts support the outer edge. This arrangement ties the deck to the building on one side.

Water control is part of the ledger connection. Flashing directs water away from the wall, and sealant can close small gaps around fasteners. Builders check the wall surface, framing behind the siding, and ledger condition before covering the connection. A ledger board needs solid wood behind it, since siding alone cannot carry deck framing.

Deck flashing and joist hangers work with the ledger. Flashing limits water entry, and hangers hold joists in place while keeping the frame aligned.

Expert Note

When we build a deck, we inspect the wall area before setting the ledger. We check for sound framing, account for siding thickness, and plan flashing so the connection sheds water. Our team also checks that the ledger aligns with the rest of the deck frame.

Deck Ledger in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants an attached deck outside a rear door. The deck builder fastens a ledger to sound wall framing, adds flashing, and connects the floor joists to create the deck base.
