About

What fence staining includes for your property

Fence staining starts with a look at the boards, posts, gates, and nearby work areas. We check for dirt, damaged wood, old coatings, and areas that need repair before application. Our documented preparation can include cleaning, repair, sanding, and priming when required. We protect furnishings, floors, fixtures, and surrounding areas during preparation and application, then keep the work aligned with the written scope. The finish decision depends on the fence condition, wood surface, desired appearance, and preparation needs. We discuss those factors during the consultation, so you can compare the planned work with the condition of your fence.

What Fence Staining Covers

Fence Staining is a wood finishing service that prepares fence boards and applies stain across suitable surfaces.

  • Fence staining differs from fence painting because stain works into prepared wood while paint forms a surface coating.
  • The service scope includes inspection, cleaning, repairs, sanding, application, protection, cleanup, and a final review.

What to prepare before fence staining

A few details help us assess the fence and plan the work clearly.

  • Clear movable items away from both sides of the fence.
  • Keep gates and access points available for the planned inspection.
  • Tell us about known repairs, old coatings, or prior stain work.
  • Share your preferred finish and any areas that need extra review.
Process

How we prepare and stain fence boards

1

Inspect the fence surface

We review fence boards, posts, gates, old coatings, damaged areas, and nearby surfaces before setting the work scope.

2

Write the itemized estimate

We provide a written, itemized scope and estimate that identifies preparation, protection, staining, cleanup, and review.

3

Prepare the wood

We clean, repair, sand, and prime when required, because stain needs a suitable surface for an even finish.

4

Protect and apply the stain

We protect surrounding areas during application and place the stain across the prepared fence surfaces covered by the scope.

5

Walk through the finished work

We complete cleanup, then review the fence with you and address correction items before closing the project.

Our Standard

Area Protection

We protect nearby surfaces and fixtures during fence preparation and stain application, then remove coverings during cleanup.

Documented Preparation

We document fence cleaning, repairs, sanding, and priming when those preparation steps are required.

Project Review

We complete cleanup, walk through the stained fence with you, and review correction items before closing the project.

These guys did an awesome job! They have a well trained team that works closely together to get the job done on time and on budget. They also did a number of other repairs on the interior and exterior ( removed dry rot, repair drywall, etc.) before they could even start the painting. I would highly recommend them!

The team at 365 did a great job painting our house. They painted the full exterior of our house, including all the trim, front door, and garage doors. Their color matching was spot on, and the front door and porch trim finish is perfectly smooth. They even did a nice job with caulking as well.

Questions about staining a wood fence

What changes the cost of staining my fence?

Fence condition, preparation needs, access, surface size, and finish requirements change the project cost. Damaged boards, old coatings, cleaning, sanding, and repairs can add work before application. We review those factors during the consultation and provide a written, itemized scope and estimate. That document separates planned preparation from the staining work itself.

Can an older fence still be stained?

An older fence can be stained when its wood is suitable for preparation and coating. Board damage, loose parts, deep weathering, and old finishes affect the decision. We inspect the fence first and explain whether cleaning, repairs, sanding, or priming are needed. The written scope then identifies the work that supports the planned finish.

What should be included in a fence staining estimate?

A fence staining estimate should identify preparation, protection, application, cleanup, and final review. Our written scope also addresses damaged areas, gates, posts, access, and surrounding surfaces when they affect the work. We provide the itemized estimate before work begins, so you can review what the planned fence service includes.

How do I prepare my property before the crew arrives?

Property access and clear work areas help the fence staining crew inspect and prepare the surfaces.

  • Move loose items away from both sides of the fence.
  • Keep gates and access paths available.
  • Share known repair or coating concerns.

We confirm protection needs during planning and include them in the written scope when they affect the work.

Does fence staining require repairs first?

Fence repairs come before staining when damaged boards or surface problems would affect the finish. We inspect boards, posts, gates, and existing coatings before application. Our carpentry services can address related repair needs when they fit the project scope. We explain those needs in the estimate instead of applying stain over an unsuitable surface.

What happens after the stain is applied?

The project ends with cleanup, a customer walkthrough, and correction review. We check the work area, remove protection, and review the finished fence with you. This final discussion gives you a chance to identify items that need attention before the project closes. We keep the review tied to the agreed scope.

Scenarios

When Customers Call Us About Fence Staining

1

Faded Boards Before Property Sale

A fence with faded boards can distract from otherwise cared-for property, especially when appearance matters before a sale. The wood condition, old finish, and damaged sections need review before stain is selected. We can inspect the fence, outline cleaning and repair needs, and provide a written scope so the planned work is easy to compare with the property schedule.

2

Uneven Finish Across Fence Panels

Uneven color often points to different surface conditions across the fence, not one simple application issue. Panels, posts, gates, and repaired areas may need separate preparation before the finish looks consistent. We’ll check those surfaces, record the required work, and explain which areas belong in the estimate before staining starts.

3

Commercial Fence Access Planning

A commercial property may need fence work coordinated around entrances, walkways, or nearby operations. Access and surrounding surfaces matter because preparation and application must stay within the agreed work area. We can review the site with the property representative, document protection needs, and provide a clear scope for the planned staining project.
